Torgau achieved fame through the meeting of American and Soviet troops on the bridge over the Elbe. Photos of the Allied handshake went around the world, heralding the imminent end of the Second World War.

Torgau reached its prime during the Renaissance when the Saxon electors expanded Hartenfels Palace, which soon became their favourite residence. Picturesquely located on the River Elbe, the site of the Second Saxon State Exhibition still conveys a vivid impression of its Renaissance past.
